2-4 Weeks Before: Skin Priming
Your provider may recommend a pre-peel skincare regimen to prepare your skin. This often includes starting a retinoid to increase cell turnover, using a vitamin C serum for antioxidant protection, and applying prescribed hydroquinone if treating hyperpigmentation (especially important for darker skin tones). This priming phase helps the peel penetrate evenly and reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
1 Week Before
Stop using retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and any exfoliating products — your skin should be in its most calm, unirritated state. Avoid waxing, threading, or depilatory creams on the treatment area. Skip laser treatments and microneedling. Stay out of the sun as much as possible and apply SPF 30+ daily. If you get cold sores, start your antiviral medication as prescribed.
Day Of
Arrive with clean, bare skin — no makeup, moisturizer, or sunscreen on the treatment area. Wear a hat and comfortable clothing (preferably a button-up so nothing has to go over your face). Your provider will assess your skin, discuss the peel depth and expected results, then apply the solution. The treatment itself takes 15-30 minutes depending on the peel type.
Set Up Your Recovery Space
Before your peel, prepare your post-treatment environment: have gentle cleanser and rich moisturizer ready (your provider will recommend specific products), stock up on SPF 30+ mineral sunscreen, clear your social calendar for 3-7 days depending on peel depth, and set up a comfortable area to rest. Having everything ready means you won't need to make a store run while your face is peeling.
