Why Some Lip Fillers Look Natural and Others Don't
The difference between natural-looking lip fillers and an overfilled result almost always comes down to three factors: injector skill, product selection, and patient-provider communication. A skilled injector understands lip anatomy — the vermillion border, the cupid's bow, the proportion between upper and lower lip — and works within your natural framework rather than against it. Overfilling happens when too much product is placed, proportions are ignored, or the wrong filler type is used.
The Golden Ratio of Lip Proportion
In aesthetics, the ideal lower-to-upper lip ratio is approximately 1:1.6 — meaning the lower lip should be slightly fuller than the upper. When this ratio is dramatically altered (especially when the upper lip is made larger than the lower), the result looks unnatural. At Lumière, we evaluate your existing proportions and enhance them, respecting the natural relationship between your lips and surrounding facial features.
How to Get Natural Results
Start conservative. It's always easier to add more filler than to dissolve excess. A good injector will recommend starting with half a syringe (0.5ml) for first-time patients, then assessing at two weeks before deciding if more is needed. This gradual approach is the single most effective way to achieve natural-looking lips. Communication matters too — bring reference photos, but be open to your provider's assessment of what will look best on your face specifically.
Red Flags to Watch For
Be cautious of any provider who pressures you to do more than you're comfortable with, doesn't discuss proportions, uses only one type of filler for all lip treatments, or shows portfolio photos that all look the same regardless of patient anatomy. The best lip injectors achieve results that look different on every patient — because every patient has different anatomy, and the goal is enhancement, not a one-size-fits-all look.
What If You're Overfilled?
The good news: hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If you're unhappy with your results (from any provider), this enzyme can partially or fully reverse the treatment. At Lumière, we also offer correction services for patients who've had filler placed elsewhere and want a fresh start.
